A HERO IS PROFILED IN THE USA PICTURES SPECIAL PRESENTATION "Judgment DAY: THE ELLIE NESLER STORY" WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23, 9:00PM, ET/PT Christine Lahti Stars As The Mother Who Killed Her Child's Molester In Open Court Judgment Day: The Ellie Nesler Story, the true and tragic story of a woman who killed the Sunday school teacher charged with molesting her 7-year-old son will premiere on USA Network Wednesday, June 23, 9:00 PM, ET/PT. Emmy Award-winning actress Christine Lahti stars as Ellie Nesler. Nesler was sentenced to 10 years in prison and the case sparked worldwide attention, inspiring a folk song and the establishment of defense funds and rallies for the woman many felt to be a hero. Shortly before her sentencing, Nesler was found to have advanced breast cancer. The judge sent her to prison even though odds were good that she would die of the cancer before being released. The single mother of two pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity on a first-degree murder charge in Toulumne County, California. Jurors found her guilty of the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter, but determined that she was sane during the killing. In August 1997, the California State Supreme Court ruled that Nesler deserved a new sanity trial, and she was freed on parole in October 1997. Ellie Nesler made headlines throughout the world and appeared on several television talk shows and news networks upon her release. When asked if what she did was worth it, Nesler replied, "It's worth it - I gave my son back his life. I wouldn't undo it". She lives in Calaveras County, California with her 16-year old son and 12-year old daughter. Her cancer is currently in remission.
